Frank Holbrook 0 Life in General

I’m writing this on August 13, 2019. It’s hard for me to believe that on July 24, 20 days ago I started trying to figure out how to write a blog. I had a partner who once told me “Once you know how to do something, it’s easy.” I’m not to the easy stage yet.

On July 27, 17 days ago, my first post, “Going Live” went up on the website. Since then I’ve posted a lot, mostly about General Conference 2020. You have to admit, that is very much a niche topic. It’s one the world in general doesn’t have a lot of interest in. With the global population estimated to be 7.7 Billion people, and the United Methodist Church membership being around 12.6 million people, even if everyone in the United Methodist Church was interested in GC 2020 the potential readers are a small portion of the world population and internet traffic. Top that off with the fact this site employs no eye catching graphics (except pictures of a Lie Nielsen plane and my dog Grace and an etching of the 1784 Christmas Conference) and the fact that Google Analytics says I have zero traffic and you get the picture of laboring in relative obscurity.

Despite that, I’m amazed that around 1,500 different people have visited the site in less than three weeks. They’ve looked at the various posts about 3,000 times. They have been in 17 different nations when they viewed the site. Most of the visitors come from Chris Ritter’s site peopleneedjesus.net. I’m grateful for Chris’ many gracious acts of linking to the site and his words of encouragement. Without him, I probably would be laboring in total obscurity.

The real moral of this short post is not about me. It’s about something I heard a long time ago; “God doesn’t want your ability, he wants your availability.” I don’t believe that anything that has happened is because of me, I think the visits to this site are because so many people care so deeply about the mission of the United Methodist Church – transforming the world by making disciples for Jesus Christ. No one of us has all the answers. I’m not sure I have any of the answers. But I believe that by asking questions, people may see things in a different light and allow God to supply answers that are pleasing to Him. I also believe that if we approach this task with the love of Christ in our hearts God will make a way.  GC 2020 doesn’t need to be GC 2019 ver. 2.
